SASSA SRD Application Process

Everything you need to know about eligibility and submitting a successful SRD grant application.

Check Your Eligibility First

Before you begin the application process, please verify that you meet the mandatory requirements stipulated by the Department of Social Development. Applicants must be:

  • A documented South African Citizen, Permanent Resident, or officially recognized Refugee registered with Home Affairs.
  • Aged between 18 and 59 years old.
  • Unemployed or receiving a monthly income that falls strictly below the R624 threshold.
  • Not currently benefiting from any other SASSA social grant.
  • Not currently registered for or receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payouts.
  • Not receiving a stipend or financial aid from NSFAS.

Your Step-by-Step Online Application Guide

The entire SRD grant application is digital. You do not need to queue at a physical SASSA branch to apply for this specific relief fund.

  1. Access the Official Portal: Navigate to the SASSA SRD Web Portal.
  2. Initiate Your Application: Scroll to the "How do I apply for this SRD Grant" section and click the yellow button to start your online form.
  3. Verify Your Phone Number: Enter your active mobile number. The system will send a One-Time Pin (OTP) via SMS. Type this pin in to confirm your identity.
  4. Enter Personal Information: Accurately input your ID number, full names as they appear on your identity document, gender, and current residential address.
  5. Select a Payment Method: Choose how you want to be paid (either via a personal bank account or through a mobile Cash Send option).
  6. Sign the Digital Declaration: You are required to read and consent to the declaration, which legally permits SASSA to cross-reference your details with SARS and various banking institutions.
Important Reminder: Always use a mobile number that is registered in your own name and that you will not lose access to. SASSA ties this number to your entire grant profile.

Post-Application Timeline

After clicking submit, your application enters a nationwide verification queue. Here is what to expect:

  • First 2–4 weeks: SASSA cross-checks your ID against SARS, UIF, DHA, NSFAS, and PERSAL databases. Your status will show as Pending.
  • eKYC biometric scan: At some point you may receive an SMS requesting a selfie verification. Complete it immediately — payments are blocked until this is done. See our eKYC guide.
  • First payment: If approved quickly enough, your first payment can arrive in the same month. The R370 is paid in the last week of each month.

What to Do if Your Grant Has Lapsed (Reapplication Required)

If your status shows "Reapplication Required", your application has lapsed and you must submit a fresh declaration. This happens when you did not complete a required step within the given timeframe. To reapply:

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reinstate.
  2. Enter your ID and registered phone number.
  3. Complete the reapplication form and submit.
  4. Check your status again after 7–14 days.

Do not start a completely new application if you already have a lapsed one — use the reinstate link above. Submitting a duplicate application can trigger a fraud flag on your profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get approved after applying?

Most initial applications are processed within 2 to 4 weeks. If you are required to complete an eKYC selfie verification, add another 24–48 hours for Smart ID card holders, or up to a week for green ID book holders. First payments are made at the end of the month in which you are approved.

Can I apply again if my previous application expired?

Yes. Use the reinstate link at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reinstate rather than creating a brand-new application. Most approved beneficiaries in 2026 are reassessed automatically and never need to reapply.
