Understanding Your Pending SRD Status

A complete guide on what to expect when your SASSA SRD status shows as Pending.

Defining the "Pending" Outcome

When you interrogate the system and receive a Pending result, it indicates that your application is currently moving through the verification queue. This is a standard phase of the monthly audit cycle and absolutely does not mean you have been rejected.

Because the SRD framework evaluates poverty levels on a month-to-month timeline, SASSA is required to cross-reference your identity against a variety of state databases repeatedly. These checks include:

  • SARS Audits: Searching for undeclared tax or income inflows.
  • UIF Registry: Confirming you aren't quietly drawing unemployment compensation.
  • DHA Records: Authenticating your citizenship and identity numbers.
  • NSFAS Checks: Ensuring you aren't double-dipping into student financial aid.

Expected Waiting Periods

The duration of the pending phase generally ranges from a couple of days to roughly two weeks. Given that SASSA audits millions of profiles simultaneously in vast batches, it is impossible to predict an exact clearance day for any single applicant.

Understanding the "Referred" Status

A closely related status is Referred. This means SASSA has sent your application to another department for extra identity or fraud verification. Referred is not a decline — most referred applications are approved once verification clears. The most common fix is to complete your eKYC biometric verification.

Critical Warning: Never attempt to lodge a fresh application while your profile is pending. This creates duplicate database entries that will severely stall your verification.

Your Immediate Action Plan

  1. Exercise Patience: Give the system at least 7 to 14 days to process before checking again.
  2. Confirm Biometrics: Verify that you have successfully finalized your eKYC Facial Scan. A missing scan acts as a hard block on your application.
  3. Review Banking Info: If you suspect a typo in your bank account numbers, proactively correct them on the Banking Update page.

Common Inquiries

Is it possible to appeal a Pending result?

No, the ITSAA tribunal only accepts appeals for statuses that have formally been marked as Declined. A pending status means SASSA hasn't made a final decision yet.

My status has been Pending for more than 2 weeks — what should I do?

If your status has not moved after 14 days, first confirm that your eKYC biometric scan is completed (check via srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc). If the scan is done and the status is still stuck, call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 (Mon–Fri 8am–4pm) and quote your ID number. An agent can tell you exactly which database check is holding up your profile.

Does a Pending status mean I won't get paid this month?

Not necessarily. If your status changes to Approved before the payment run ends (typically the last week of the month), you will still receive your payment for that month. However, if SASSA's verification does not complete in time, you may have to wait until the following month's run.

Why do PERSAL and NSFAS checks cause extended pending periods?

SASSA cross-references your ID against the PERSAL government payroll system and the NSFAS student bursary database. These checks involve external government departments and can take longer than the standard SARS or UIF verification. If you were previously employed by government or received NSFAS funding years ago, your profile may take longer to clear — even if you are now fully eligible.
