SASSA SRD Status Declined: Next Steps
Find out why your application was rejected and how to lodge an official appeal with ITSAA.
Why Did My Application Get Rejected?
A Declined status implies that you did not satisfy the strict eligibility requirements for the current month. SASSA is obligated to display a distinct reason for rejection next to your status. The most frequent causes are:
Income Source Identified
The automated screening detected financial inflows into your bank accounts that surpass the R350/R370 limit. SARS data is also utilized to confirm this.
UIF Registered
Your profile is flagged as an active recipient of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) compensation.
NSFAS Registered
You are enrolled for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary payments, which renders you ineligible for the SRD.
Identity Verification Failed
The personal data supplied does not align with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) registry, or you skipped the mandatory eKYC facial scan.
SAFPS / Fraud Risk
The South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) has marked your details as a high fraud risk.
Government Payroll Registered
You are listed on the national PERSAL system as a state employee.
Already Receiving a Grant
You are already a beneficiary of another permanent SASSA grant such as a Disability Grant or Old Age Pension. Note: receiving a Child Support Grant for your children does not cause this decline.
Deceased Record at DHA
The Department of Home Affairs has incorrectly marked your ID number as deceased. This is rare but does occur. You must visit a SASSA or Home Affairs office in person with your ID document and proof of life to have the record corrected.
How to Dispute the Decision
If you are certain the rejection is a mistake, you can legally contest it. However, appeals are exclusively managed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), rather than SASSA directly.
- Visit the dedicated ITSAA Appeals Website.
- Fill in your ID number and the mobile number linked to your profile.
- Choose the specific month you are contesting and hit "Lodge Appeal".
- Supply a clear motivation for your dispute.
Deadline: Lodge your appeal within 30 days of the month for which you were declined. Late appeals are generally not accepted.

The Month-to-Month Evaluation
Please note that the SRD mechanism performs independent checks every single month. Failing the test in one month doesn't mean you are banned forever. However, if you are rejected for multiple months and disagree with the outcome, you must file a separate appeal for each individual month.
Correcting Your Details
A rejection is occasionally triggered by obsolete data. If your phone number or banking coordinates are out of sync, quickly update them via our Change Number tutorial or Banking Details walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appeal again if my appeal was declined?
No. Once ITSAA declines an appeal for a specific month, that decision is final for that month within the SASSA system. You cannot submit a second appeal for the same month. If you believe ITSAA made a procedural error, your remaining option is a judicial review through the courts — contact Legal Aid South Africa on 0800 110 110 for free legal advice.
Does a declined appeal affect my next month's SRD status?
No. Each month is assessed completely independently. A declined appeal for one month has zero effect on your eligibility or result in any future month. You will continue to be re-evaluated automatically every month.
How long does ITSAA take to review an appeal?
ITSAA appeals typically take between 60 to 90 days to be reviewed. You can check your appeal status at any time via the official SASSA appeals portal. The result will show as "Appeal Approved" or "Appeal Declined" once a decision is made.
